.Camp Shady Brook. A misadventure. Sorta.
When my mom roused me awake that morning, I knew it was the day. The day me and my core at school were taking a camping trip to a camp up in the mountains. I sat up, my dark, short hair sticking up in multiple places and my brown eyes were almost falling out. I practically fell out of bed, then stumbled into the kitchen. Somehow, mom the great had managed to wake up before 6 in the morning and make muffins for me and my sister. My sister wasn't as easy to wake up as me.
I dully chewed on my muffin until I found myself eating the wrapper. "Get dressed Katie!" my mom hollered from the back room. "And get your bag by the door!"
Bag? I thought. Oh yeah, I was supposed to pack on last night. I padded into my room and pulled a blue bag out of my very messy closet. A few things fell down from the shelf, but I ignored them.
Not paying attention, I pulled random shirts off the hanger wrack and threw them in the bag. I finally caught myself throwing a reindeer sweater in the bag. "Nuh-uh." I said, tossing it back. I grabbed my sandals and converse, sticking the sandals in the bag and throwing the sneakers into the hall to wear.
I kicked the closet shut, and shuffled to my dresser. I pulled out a pair of sweats, jeans, and 2 shorts. I also got my swimsuit, because I'd heard there was a lake. I chucked underwear, and at least 12 socks into the duffel. My sketchbook, markers, and phone went in the bag. They said not to bring electronics, but I didn't care. The phones only gonna be in my jean pockets folded up in my bag. Besides, I felt insecure without it.
I zipped the bag shut and threw it out the door by my converse. I walked into the bathroom and brushed my teeth and my hair. I hair sprayed it and stuck a flower in there. Traditional Katie hair. I went back into my room and dug around in my closet. I pulled out my unicorn shirt, my neon yellow tank top, and my dark blue capris. Traditional Katie dress. I threw a little mascara and lip gloss on, and put in my ear cuffs, and I was good to go. I had also read the place didn't have sheets or blankets on their beds, so I shoved my teddy bear green blanket and duck pillow into the bag. I could hardly zip the stupid thing.
Before I knew it, I was standing with my friends by 3 buses in front of the school.
"Ugh, forget it." Groaned Taylee, plopping her bags down. "we've been standing here for 20 minutes and haven't even been let on the stupid bus yet."
Lauren shrugged. "It's totally okay! I'm so excited!"
I laughed. "The way you continuously keep a positive attitude always amazes me."
"Hey," said Izzy, "Check it out."
Our teacher, Ms. Y., was starting to give directions. When she got to us, we were all stuck onto bus 2.
I looked out the window, and felt a poking on the back of my head.
"Jeanine." I said. "I know it's you."
She giggled, and stopped. Then, she turned to Alistar, the most mature guy in our school, and started talking about something I didn't care about, so I tuned them out.
I zoned out, until I realized Lauren staring at me in a freaky way.
" I said, "Hey, lauren."
She giggles. "HAAAAAAI." And plumps back over to her seat.
The bus starts to move. We pull out of the drive way, and onto the street.
As the bus rolls along and up Ute Pass, everyone gawks over the theme park on the side of the hill. It was dorky, but fun none the less.
About 45 minutes up the road, we come to a valley. And it's burned. Every tree is just a black stick coming out of the ground. The plants are totally destroyed, and there were no signs of life.
"Holy crap." I breathe.
"Mmmhmmm." Izzy said.
"This is so horrible." Whispered Taylee.
The driver had said no eating or drinking on the bus, but I pulled out my water bottle and took a few swigs. The kids on the bus are gawking like idiots again, so I look to see what's up. In the side of the road runs a really deep river.
"Wow. River. Big whoop." Izzy put her ear buds in and tuned everyone out.
We eventually come to a really thin, steep hill. Just for the sake of freaking out, everyone screams as the bus driver easily eases up the road.
After about 10 minutes, we were on a dirt road. And the camp was in sight. A few log cabins were visible built on a hill.
"Whoa." Said Izzy, taking out her ear buds and sticking her IPod in her pocket.
We round a corner, and the whole camp is visible. Once we see the whole thing, I say what I think. " It's a dump."
Izzy shook her head. "It's not bad. Be positive."
Taylee looked up on a dirt hill. "That's the girls lodge." The bus rolled up in front of the hill, next to a big log, 2 little buildings, and a little stream. To the left were 2 shacks, 2 mess halls, and an outside pavilion.
The buses screech to a stop, and all the kids file off the bus.
Everyone takes forever, so we're standing there for like 15 minutes, waiting for these kids to get all their crap off the bus. Meanwhile, I observe the scene.
It's a traditional little camp in the middle of nowhere. All the buildings are built out of wood. There are some stairs towards the back, which look like they lead up to more shacks and possibly a baseball field.
After all the stuff was out of the bus, Ms Y. lets us walk around a bit, but don't go up the stairs. Me and my friends mosey on over to the stream by the boys lodge. We walked down a steep hill down to the water. Lucas hangs out with us and jumps around in the water. Me and Lauren go upstream and walk back. We come back, and Devynne is laying sideways on the hill with a nasty gash on her leg. I end up piggy backing her up the hill.
"we've only been here 20 minutes and one of you has already managed to get hurt." Ms. Y. laughs as she puts a band aid on Devynnes leg.
Then, we're all called up onto the deck of the lodge. We are all directed to our rooms. Me and all my friends head to ours, on the right. 4 other girls are in there too. Luckily, they're all nice and not idiots.
Taylee runs for the first bunk she sees, and is settled on the top of a bunk with her Broncos blanket in 2 seconds. Devynne hops to the next top bunk she sees and has her whole bag dumped at the end of the bed. Lauren hops on top of the next one, but decides she wants the bottom and scurries down there. Izzy is chilling on her bunk below Taylee. Jeanine has her humongo sleeping bag layed out below Devynne, which left me with the top bunk above Lauren.
" I sigh. "is awesome." Lauren has now decided to jump from bed to bed, squealing. I'm kind of annoyed by laughing at the same time. Taylees yelling at Lauren to shut up, and Izzys just watching
Then, Ms. Y calls us out. We go to the pavilion and have a bunch of snacks. Then, 3 counselors came out and introduced themselves. They were goofy and funny, and were practically kids in their 20s. They tell us a few things about camp. And that they're having water problems, and that we'll only able to get water at 20 minute intervals during the day. I groan. This place IS a dump . Then, we were assigned groups and sent up the stairs.
When we reached the top, we saw the rest of camp. There was a little hall to the left with a piano against the wall. To the right, there was a little run down basket ball court. Ahead was a volley ball net, and beyond that, a base ball field. Even farther, way out there where the trees started again, was a Gaga Ball pitt. One of the counslers, Pal, came up and showed us a game on the basket ball court. We were all hot and sweaty, but then the people sent us up a hill to a rope course, where our feet were tied to two wood planks and we all had to walk at the same time. We were practically dying, but were thrown into yet another activity. We had to get a bunch of crumpled up newspapers into a bucket through a complicated rope system. After that, we were almost awarded with lunch, when we were lined up outside the mess hall. Then, a lady we hadn't seen before stepped onto the porch.
She jabbered on about the history of Camp, which would've been very interesting if we weren't all hot and hungry. Once she stopped talking about that, she moved on to something else.
Within 2 minutes, everyone was doing a ridiculous camp dance about a squirrel.
Then, we were finally let in the mess hall to get our food.
"I'm going to have a heatstroke." Moaned Taylee, gulping down her lemonaid. "And this food is gross."
"If you guys are just gonna complain, can you do it when I'm not around?" Izzy groaned, "This vegetarian pizza is very tasty."
I swallowed down all my food and guzzled my lemonade and set my head on the table. When everyone had finished, we were allowed to have free time for awhile. While other kids went to play baseball or volleyball, we went to the lake.
"Cool, a dock!" I yelled. I ran over to it and through a gatem followed by my friends. I flew down a little hill onto the dock, next toms. Y. and one of the counselors named Matt. I stuck my legs in a kicked around in the cold water. Izzy sat down next to me, then Taylee, and then Lauren. Jeanine sat on the other side of me.
Jeanine took her foot out of the water and looked at it.
"What are those?" she wimpered. She pointed to little brown green squishy things on her skin.
"Chill out Jeanine." Groanes Taylee. "It's just junk from the pond."
"Actually, no." came Matt's voice.
I looked more closely at them. "That's not pond scum."
Of course, our group freaked out and cleared out the dock, so we head back to the lodge to hang out.
"This is our place guys. Like our very own house." I said, hanging upside down from the railing of my bed.
"Totally." Said Taylee, leaning over to Devynnes bed. "hey, can I have a piece?"
Devynne was holding a pack of gum. "yeah sure." Natuarally, everyone gathered around to get a piece of gum.
We were tired of staying inside all the time, so we kicked off their shoes and walked down to the creek.
Jeanine and Alistar were already there, splashing each other.
Izzy and Taylee sat at the table, while I splashed Alistar with mighty waves. Lauren just stood in the water, staring down at the pebbles. When free time wasn't even half over, Ms. Y. hollered from the porch that there was going to be a smores campfire a little while after dinner.
We were cold and wet, and covered in gross water, so we slopped up the dirt hill. At the base was something dead. It was a mouse.
"Aw, no, it's dead. Poor baby." I said. "Let's burry it."
Izzy dug a little hole in the ground, and Lauren and Taylee got some flowers. I got a twig and picked up the body, and set it in the hole.
"This mouse, was a loyal and adorable creature, that graced the lands of Camp. Bless its soul and give it a peaceful life, elsewhere."
After the mouse burial, we trekked up the hill to the lodge again. It was nice to just be able to hang out in the n ice air conditioned cabin.
I let out a burp and leaned back on one of the spare beds. Devynne came in and jumped up to her bunk.
"Party on my bed!" she called.
Me and Lauren hopped up and each got another piece of gum.
Izzy and Taylee stepped in. Taylee took off her hat and wiped the sweat off her head. Katie hopped down from the bed to stand with Izzy.
Taylee placed her hat back on her head.
Then, Jeanine comes up behind Taylee and swipes her hat.
"Give it over, Jeanine."
Jeanine giggled and shook her head. Taylee chased Jeanine all over the room, but she wouldn't give It back "Jeanine! Knock it off!"
Jeanine sadly gave Taylee the hat and ran away. She ran off the porch and out to ccamp.
"Aw, no." groaned Izzy. "Now what?"
"We catcher, of course!" criend Lauren.
"Guys, "Katie sighed. "We know Jeanine. She can run faster than anybody. And who knows where she is. She could be at the lake or in the mess hall or anywhere."
So, we end up looking for Jeanine all over camp.
I'm asking everybody if they've seen Jeanine. Alsitar says he saw her to the right of the volley ball pit.
And there she was. She saw us, and ran down the hill to the dirt road by the gift shop.
"Great." I groaned. So we went down the hill to the shop.
When we saw her, she looked happy and was giggling.
So we gave up on catching her and hung out in the room until dinner.
In an hour, we were called to the mess hall. We had to sing more stupid songs, but got to eat all the same. The girl stood before us and announced that there was going to be the campfire. After the campire, there was going to be a night hike.
"night hike. Cool." Said Devynne, sipping her grape juice.
After we finish diner, we have more free time. So we all go hang by the stream. We're all sitting on at the picnic table, when Ms. Y. comes and sits by us. I'm squatting at the end of the table on the ground by the water. We get to talking about feet, when Lauren says someone she knows feet look like a land shark, we all laugh really hard. I fall backwards and slide down the hill. So Ms. Y. take a picture of me laying upside down on the hill in my panda hat.
When she left, she said to get dressed for the night hike. Naturally, everyone except for me is in pants. Im in shorts and Izzys Simple as Surgery Sweater.
"Katie, you really should put on pants." Izzy sighed as she cleaned her glasses.
"Pfffft." I laugh. "Pants. No way."
So we grab our flashlights and walk up hill to the fire pit. Benjamin is jumping around in the smoke.
We settle down next to Connor and Anna, and eat our smores. Then, when the counselors re talking, Taylee notices something.
"Did you see that?" she whispered, pointing to the guys cabin to the right.
I looked over. "No
" a flash came from the window. "Yes."
"What is that?" asked Lauren, looking over. " Is it a person?"
I shook my head. "I don't know, but whatever it is, its scaring the crap out of me."
So we watch for a while more, when we figure out it isn't normal. I walk up to the window and look in, there isn't anyone. "Oh, God
" I breathe.
Then, a flash comes from the wooden floor, so I look down to see Dalton with a camera. So I march around the side of the cabin and said I was going to kick his butt multiple times.
So then, we all break up in groups for the night hike. We do some stuff with light and illusions, then head back for the lodge. We get half and hour to hang on the porch, then go to our rooms for the night.
So Izzy and Taylee are talking in the room, I'm on the porch, and Lauren walks out of the bathroom in this cheetah dress. She walked in when Izzy and Taylee were talking.
"I'm putting a shirt on because they laughed at me." She whimpered and scurried to change.
Taylee and Lauren came out on the porch and Izzy went to the bathroom. When Izzy walks out, Taylee goes SPICEGIRLS! Ms. Y. tells us to go in for the night.
We are all in our beds and the lights are turned off. I'm just listening to the constant giggling until I fall asleep.
A little while later, I wake up. I hear a scuffling noise., I sit up a bit to see what it is. I see a figure tip toeing across the room to Izzys bed. I figure it's just Izzy, so I lay back down. I hear Izzy whispering really hard to someone and I look at the bunk under me. Lauren was gone and scared. Izzy told Lauren to go away or die. I just turned over and groaned. IM NOT DEALING WITH THIS. I'm almost asleep again when I hear more scuffling. SOMEONE IS ABOUT TO DIE. I thought, sitting up. Lauren is now climbing up the ladder into Taylee's bed.
I can tell Taylee isn't happy because she's kind of hissing. Eventually, Taylee is slammed against the wooden railing and Lauren in squeezed in by the wall. They are moving around and laughing for 20 minutes. Then, the flipping wooden railing bangs around all night because Taylee is constantly moving due to her unexpected guest.
I hear stomping on the porch. Im about to yell SHUT UP IM TRYING TO SLEEP when I noticed it was morning. I groan. I look at my phone. Don't' have to be in the mess hall for 30 minutes. Why is everyone out on the porch? I think. I curl up and dose off again, until I hear Taylee. I open my eyes just a bit. She's sitting up, and so is Lauren. They're both disturbed by the noise.
"Don't we have to go to the mess hall?" taylee sleepily asked.
" yawned a sleepy Lauren.
Devynne sits up.
I try to ignore the situation and go back to sleep, but soon Jeanine is up. I look over, realizing the other girls must've left already.
I finally sit up, practically dead. Izzy has to be shaken awake.
Naturally, we all feel like crap from lack of sleep.
"Guess who crawled in with me last night?" said Taylee as she sat on her bed.
"Lauren, I know." Groaned Izzy. "She scared the living crap out of me in the middle of the night."
"I was scared." She whispered. "And lonely."
I shook my head and chuckled. "Lonely in a room full of bunk beds full of people."
We all just sit for a minute, letting the sleep leave us. Finally, we drag ourselves out of bed and get dressed.
When we walk out on the porch, we're kina confused.
"Where is every-" Devynee saw them. "body."
They were all lined up outside the mess hall, doing another dance.
"well, crap." I sigh.
Ms. Y is behind us. "Why are you guys still up here?"
We all turn around quickly.
"Slept in." I say, scratching the back of my head.
"Well, get down there. We have a lot to do today!"
So we run down the porch steps and in the lines. We're doing another dance, and we're let inside.
The breakfast was actually good. They had cereal and pancakes. We ate, slowly, and sat in silence until the counselor said to get dressed for the lake. We were canoeing.
A while later, we're all standing on the dock with paddles. Of course it's all misty and rainy, so the paddles are practically freezing to our hands. One by one, the groups are put in canoes and sent out onto the lake.
I'm in a boat with Taylee and Lauren. I'm paddling in the front, while Taylee's in the back, with Lauren freaking out in the middle.
Izzy's with Connor and Aly, and Devynne is with Jeanine and Alistar.
We're just going along, when out of nowhere, Alistar comes up and rams us with his boat.
"What the heck?" I say, whacking his boat with my paddle.
We paddle away, Alistar follows us.
Pretty soon, Connor is coming in with power and slamming into us.
Now, the whole lake is going around and ramming into each other.
Within the next hour, Matt has us up in the mountains studying fire ecology. It's not that interesting until Connor starts to sprint up ever hill he sees. We reach the top and can very clearly see the burn area of a fire.
"Fire came that close to camp, huh?" I said.
Matt nodded. "Yep. We though Shady Brook would be burned to the ground."
"It was close." Said Devynne.
We all walked, except Connor, down the hills to the mess hall.
We ate waffle fries and sandwiches and we were all kind of sad we were leaving after lunch.
We all trekked up the hill to the lodge for the last time.
I throw my stuff in my bag and sling it over my shoulder. Everyone else packs up their stuff and leaves the room. I turn around for one last glimpse.
On the bus ride home, we are all quiet. Me and Izzy text each other on the way home in the dead silence of the bus. It starts to rain, and when we pull into the parking lot of school, it's drizzling.
We all separate and go wait for our parents. I miss Shady Brook already, no matter how dorky it was and how gross the food was. I'm looking at all my stuff and realized how awesome my friends were. This story is dedicated to them.
